“I’m just living life, and I live it how I like”
Theia’s new single ‘Candy’ is an unapologetic and carefree celebration of individuality; a blast of pure energy that sees the Kiwi alt-pop artist breaking new ground.
“‘Candy' is about that moment when you stop caring what others think of you. It’s about letting go and forging your own path; not following others, and the power and the freedom that comes from just being yourself,” says Theia.
“I’m a killer queen, I do my own thing”
Pulsating with bass throughout; a melody that seamlessly swings from grit to gloss; and packed with piercing one-liners, Theia once again reveals herself to be a songwriter who is unafraid to push boundaries.
‘Candy’ saw Theia return for the first time in two years to Golden Age Studio in Auckland (where Lorde made Pure Heroine) with pop producing extraordinaire Josh Fountain, who produced much of Theia’s 2017 debut EP, including her smash hit ‘Roam’.
“I’d had a bit of a hiatus from the studio and I’d had time to reflect on the last few years of making music. It was important to get back to writing and to just let loose and make the kind of song I wanted to make. Not to please anyone, but myself. Once I’d reached that place; ‘Candy’ came easy. It felt right!”
“We don’t wanna be like you, we ain’t got a thing to prove”
‘Candy’ signals a new chapter in Theia’s musical journey and shines a light on one of New Zealand’s most idiosyncratic pop artists, who has opened for Sia and Portugal. The Man, as well playing some of New Zealand’s biggest festivals from R&V to Bay Dreams.
The Christchurch-born singer - who was nominated for three awards at the 2017 NZ Music Awards - has continued to challenge the limits lyrically and sonically.
‘Candy’ follows on from Theia’s recent singles ‘Bye Bye’, co-written with the legendary Mike Elizondo, and ‘Bad Idea’, co-written with Grammy Award-winning Emily Warren. All three songs will be included on her second EP due for release in 2019.
“My reality, better than your fantasy, there’s no stopping me”
