A break-up song that cuts through with hard-hitting lyrics, but deceptive sonic simplicity, ‘Just ‘Cause You Don’t Want Me’ showcases the depth and breadth of Parsons’ songwriting prowess.
Both heartbreaking and triumphant, it sees the singer-songwriter opening up about the end of a relationship.
Parsons wrote ‘Just ‘Cause You Don’t Want Me’ when she was on a punishing two-month solo tour in the US and had a couple of days off between dates, staying in a cabin on the edge of a lake in Washington State, which by happy coincidence had a beautiful old piano in the lounge.
“The song itself is pretty basic in terms of content,” she says. “I think the title and the chorus gives a pretty fair summary of what it's about. It came together fairly quickly, which is usually a good sign for me. I think one of my favourite things about this song are the backing vocals.”
‘Just ‘Cause You Don’t Want Me’ sits alongside nine other songs on Parsons’ third record GLASS HEART, including the already released ‘I Got The Lonely’ and ‘Blame’.
The album is a bold and beautifully crafted body of work, in which Parsons reveals a darker, fuller sound. Production credits go to celebrated LA-based producer Mitchell Froom, who has worked with the likes of Crowded House, Suzanne Vega, Elvis Costello, Lindsey Buckingham / Christine McVie.
GLASS HEART is out on November 30 and Parsons and her band will celebrate the release with a three-date New Zealand tour.
She’s at Meow in Wellington on December 5; The Anthology Lounge in Auckland on December 6 and LAF in Christchurch on December 8.
