Aotearoa artist Rachel Leo has today released her much-anticipated pop banger ‘Last Call’ - co-written with and produced by NZ pop heavyweights, Drax Project.
Taking inspiration from the likes of Kiana Ledé, Maggie Rogers, Dua Lipa and Yebba, ‘Last Call’ is a brilliantly crafted power-pop single that’s bound to have listeners instantly humming, singing and moving with the beat. The song itself tells the story of infidelity and the souring of a relationship.
“While it was initially a really painful situation to write about,” explains Rachel, “I had so much fun writing this with the Drax Project boys in their Pōneke studio! After a long gossip sesh about what happened, we got creative with the lyrics using metaphors that nod to the local bar and nights out where everything went down. Sitting in the pop genre with disco influence, it’s a bit of a combination of both of our (Drax Project) musical styles.”
Set to build on the success of Rachel’s debut release ‘Conversation’, which saw her land on the Hot NZ Singles charts, pack out a show, feature on TVNZ’s Breakfast, build a fanbase and secure spots on the lineups of some of the country’s biggest festivals - it’s no wonder she is deemed by many as New Zealand’s next pop export.
Accompanying the single is a stunningly shot and performed video directed by Devan Narsai and starring Aotearoa actor Richard Crouchley (Black Hands) as the wandering suitor.
A 3-time recipient of NZ On Air funding, in 2021 Rachel Leo worked with Alex Wildwood (The Veronicas, Broods) under the New Music Development initiative and was awarded the New Music Single grant to support the release of her next two singles. After studying a Bachelor of Music and honing her writing style, she has been collaborating with the likes of Drax Project, Chores, Lauren Gin and Lee Mvtthews. Her songs have been placed on playlists, including Apple Music’s New Music Daily, YouTube’s RELEASED and Spotify’s New Music Friday. Rachel Leo is clearly one to watch, so make sure you’re following!
