Waste Free Wanda Musical Hits Schools in 2020

Anna van Riel Music, Plastic Free Wanaka and Queenstown Lakes District Council are proud to announce the launch of a new super hero that they hope will help combat single-use waste in the District.

Children who attend the 11 primary schools in the QLDC can look forward to a dynamic performance in term one this year.

Waste Free Wanda is a one-woman musical by Lake Hawea’s award-winning singer/songwriter Anna van Riel.

“The show is based on an adolescent kid called Wanda, who discovers she has super powers. I won’t give too much away, but I can tell you that the show is a great combination of funny, emotive and musical.

I’ve had a lot of help from amazing locals and family, and can’t wait to share it with our community,” says Anna.

The action and music-packed show run for 36 mins and fits into a classroom period, with enough time for Q&A with Waste Free Wanda.

“I’m in the thick of rehearsals now, and am touching base with all QLDC schools to organise a visit to all our Tamariki. My hope is that the show inspires as well as entertains”.

Although Waste Free Wanda is being shared to schools Anna assures interested parties that the show is entertaining for adults and children alike.

With music and costumes inspired by the 1980’s, the show includes powerhouse anthems and ballads reminiscent of the music from films such as Fame and FlashDance.

With a growing consciousness around plastic waste, Anna’s hope is that her show empowers audiences to be the change, as they laugh and sing along.
