Kiwi soul sensation Bailey Wiley will release ‘Lady’ on Friday, November 3 - the first single from her upcoming and eagerly-anticipated EP, due for release in 2018.
As a teaser to the single release this Friday, the accompanying video for ‘Lady’ has featured on Red Bull.
A smooth and laidback track that epitomises Wiley’s trademark soulful sound, ‘Lady’ is an empowering ode to knowing your self-worth. “It’s about honouring yourself and knowing when to call your man out,” says Wiley. “It’s about standing on your own and knowing what’s best for you.”
Part of the ‘Red Bull Sound Select x Young Gifted and Broke’ roster, Wiley is the only Kiwi chosen to perform at Red Bull’s ‘30 Days in Chicago in the United States. She will open for Syd (AKA as the frontwoman for The Internet) at her sold-out show at The Metro. Wiley will also spend time in LA and New York.
The single, made with the help of Eno, Soraya, Guy Harrison and Ben Lawson, is accompanied by a video, which was shot and edited by Jasper Jay and directed by Wiley herself.
“With the video, we wanted to put a spin on the way the public views women. And yes, sure we got a bunch of beautiful wahine and put them in Lonely lingerie, but we also inverted the images to give the viewer a cryptic understanding of what’s going on and what we’re trying to say - you don’t always have to take your clothes off to gain attention.”
“Women are deeper than that; more intelligent than that. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder - it doesn’t matter what size, shape, colour, age or religion you are. Beauty is not prejudice.”
‘Lady’ is the first single to be released from Wiley’s upcoming EP, which is due for release in early 2018.
Graduating from the National Academy of Singing and Performing in 2012, Wiley has gone on to establish herself as one of New Zealand’s most accomplished neo-soul artists, releasing the critically-acclaimed records IXL in 2014 and S.O.M.M. in 2016. She has also collaborated with, and featured on tracks alongside some of New Zealand’s best talent, including Raiza Biza, Soraya, Ronald Lapread, Laughton Kora, Eno x Dirty, Tom Scott, Mr Carmack, Team Dynamite and more.
