The Ōtautahi-born artist (Waikato-Tainui, Ngāti Tīpa) is at the forefront of a new generation of young creatives in Aotearoa, who are determined to smash through the glass ceiling. When Theia is not releasing edgy, alt-pop bangers and challenging social injustices, she’s releasing exquisite angelic waiata that pay tribute to her tūpuna wāhine as part of her reo rangatira project, TE KAAHU. Her work as Theia has drawn a loyal fan base across the globe, receiving critical acclaim from the likes of Pigeons & Planes, Rolling Stone, Clash and Billboard Magazine. She has three Theia EPs to her name, which have earned her a multitude of nominations at the NZ Music Awards and the Waiata Māori Music Awards, as well as significant commercial radio play and chart success. Fans can expect Theia’s first full-length album in 2023. Meanwhile, since emerging in 2020, Theia’s TE KAAHU project has seen success on the Official NZ Charts and on student radio, while also receiving global attention. In 2021, Apple Music hand-picked TEKAAHU as the feature artist for their ‘Up Next’ campaign, while TikTok invited Theia to perform for Māori Language Week with 16.5k tuning in live.
